There are comic books and books about comic books. This is a book about comics from the 1950s and 1960s, the “Silver Age” of this internationally acclaimed artform. Specifically, this is an overview of superhero comic books, a coffee table edition for “baby boomers” who cut their cultural teeth on Spider-man, The Flash, Superman, and hundreds of other spandex clad characters.
If you haven’t already abandoned “Suspended Animation” for “Dear Abby” [editor’s note: this column ran in many newspapers], or the crossword puzzle, that means you’ll enjoy this volume for the sake of nostalgia or because you are obsessed with men-like-gods.
You’ll love this book.
“Superhero Comics of the Silver Age” is heavily illustrated with covers and individual panels from comics published since DC Comics’ “Showcase” #4, the first appearance of a revitalized superhero created in the 1940s, The Flash. This genre had fallen on hard times after WWII, and this fleet-footed, updated version of the Greek god, Hermes, was the first to sell well again. That’s why the “Silver Age” of comics began in 1956.
Yes, the “Golden Age” and “Silver Age” of comics have everything to do with newsstand profits, and little to do with quality.
There was quality titles published in these decades, as in all decades since the birth of comics. You’ll find them reviewed in this book in a style that’s lively and interesting … if you love superheroes. In fact, this is an extremely accurate, well written and researched non-fiction work, fun to look at and enjoy.
But I remain baffled. Anniversary gifts increase in value each year. Paper. Wood. Silver. Gold. Platinum. Why do ages in comic books decrease in value?
Will we someday find ourselves in the “Paper Age” of comic books?

One of my goals is to write how this relates in my personal life. For toay, it must remain one of my goals.
I do not have the time to get this creative idea out of my mind and down on paper.
